Definitioner

stem girdling roots: disorder caused by abnormal growth of the tree roots in a circular patter around a stem. As the roots and stem grow, they begin to exert pressure on each other which inhibits some normal tree functions. Can cause tree health to decline and potentially cause failure in storms or high winds.
root flare: the area where roots and trunk come together. Also called root collar, root crown or buttress.
mulch: an organic compound usually consisting of shredded wood or bark designed to hold water near the soil for tree availability.
margin: the outside edge of a leaf, can be smooth, serrated (sawtoothed), wavy, or other shapes.
diameter: the thickness or width of a tree's trunk or trunks.
decay: areas where organisms such as fungi or some insects are feeding on the wood of a tree, this creates a color change in the wood, as well as a weak area in a tree’s structure.
